Inspect Your Bicycle Safety Gear Frequently

It is important that you equip your bike with reflectors, lights and flashers. You want motorists to be able to see you clearly. But don’t forget to protect your body as well.  Having a good helmet is imperative in case of a bad fall. Use gloves with gel pads protect yo

ur hands from road rash. All of these items are necessary to have a safe biking experience, but time and use takes its toll on these items. Regular inspections prevent them from failing when you need it the most.

Start with the lighting and reflectors on the bike. Make sure any reflective tape is firmly adhering to the fram e.

Peel off anything that has come loose and replace with new tape. Go over fixed ref lectors to check for cracking. Replace them completely. Check the light switch and power of lamps. If the light does not seem as strong as it should be, check the battery case for any corrosion. When there is no corrosion, it is simply time to replace the batteries. Do it while you are thinking about it so you won’t get caught out at night. The same goes for any flashers on the bike.

Your helmet is the most important safety item you use. However, UV rays from the sun will slowly degrade the plastic, causing it to lose its ability to absorb shock. How often you bike will determine how often you have to replace the helmet.

Always be aware of your safety gear’s condition. It can make all the difference between having a wobble and a bad fall.

Cycling Safety Tips

Cycling is a healthy and fun filled experience when proper safety precautions are observed. Hydration, personal protective equipments and inflation of tire are the three areas where you have to concentrate for your safety during cycling.

Hydration means providing adequate quantity of water to the body. Whenever you cycle, lots of water in your body is lost through sweat. Hence it is essential to keep drinking water with you while cycling. You can either attach a bottle through a cage in the bicycle frame or carry a backpack with water.

Personal protection can be ensured by using protective equipments like bike helmet and gloves. Helmet has to be worn all the time when you ride, irrespective of the speed of your bicycling. Helmet which you use should meet the quality standards set by the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). Another important thing is that it should fit you properly.

If your helmet has a crack in the expanded polystyrene foam inside, then you will have to replace it. Wearing helmet reduces the severity of injuries to the head, brain and the face thus protecting you from being injured seriously. Gloves can be worn in order to get a good grip of the handlebar and also to prevent your hands from abrasions and cuts while falling.

Apart from having safety equipments, you should also read and use them properly. For example, wearing helmet without fastening its strap is of no use as the helmet will fall off when you fall down thus exposing your head. Hence it is important to read the instructions given in the equipment completely to use them efficiently.

Flat tires are something which every cyclist will face. You should carry a patch kit with you so that you can repair small holes in the inner tube of your wheels. Similarly you should also carry a new inner tube and portable air pump in order to continue with the journey.

Wearing bike helmet is the most important step you have to follow before you start your bicycle ride. Without helmet, accidents can cause severe head injury. Head injuries damage the brain the consequences of such accidents can be long lasting and devastating. Choose a light weight and properly fitting helmet for yourself. It should also meet the standards laid out by the Consumer Product Safety commission (CPSC). Remember to wear your helmet every time with the straps fastened. A good quality and correctly fitting helmet has to be worn every time you ride as it can reduce the damages caused to your head, face, and brain during accidents.

Apart from wearing helmet you should also check the condition of your bicycle to ensure safety. You will have to check the brakes regularly. You should also check whether the seat, tires and handlebars are fitting tightly, check the air and pressure in the wheels and also to regularly oil the chain. Another important step to be taken by you is to wear bright clothes and keeping reflectors so that you will be seen by other commuters. Take care not to wear clothes that might get caught in the bicycle chain. Similarly wear footwear that gives you a good grip on the pedals. You should also look out for hurdles on the roads like big puddles, gravel, curbs, storm grates and so on in order to have a safe riding.

History of Bicycles

Bicycles are in use since 1869. The vehicles which were predecessors of bicycles were known as velocipedes, a French name. It all started when a Frenchman invented Celerifere in 1690. It had a wooden beam attached to wheels; rider had to sit on the beam and propel the vehicle by pushing his feet against the ground.

In 1816, the first two-wheeler with a steering was designed by a German man. It was named as Draisine and had a handle bar to turn the front wheel for changing the direction of the vehicle. Then numerous additions and innovations were made to this machine by people all over Germany, France and Britain. Such vehicles were known as hobby horses in England.

In 1881, curricle was invented which had weight lighter than the Draisine and had an elbow rest and adjustable saddle. In 1839, pedals and driving levers were added to Draisine by Kirkpatrick Macmillan of Scotland. Short cranks were fixed to rear wheel hub. Then they were connected to a long rod attached to the front side of the machine. Thus the riders could propel the vehicle with their feet off the ground. The vehicle moved with the forward and downward thrust of the pedals.

In 1846, this model was improved and given the name Dalsell which became immensely popular. Then came the actual predecessor of the bicycle. It was velocipede of the French people. Here the wheels and frame were made from wood with iron tires attached. The pedals were kept slightly higher than the back wheels. In 1869, solid rubber tires with steel rims were used in the velocipede to reduce the shaking effect on the peddlers. It was patented and given a new name “bicycle”. Then numerous innovations like adding ball bearing, pneumatic tires, spring seats, gears, chains and so on were added to get these days model of bicycle.

So if you are serious about getting your biking down, here are a few tips to keep you from being derailed.

Bike Lots

Practice certainly does make perfect when it comes to getting on a bike. There are a lot of subtle things that the bike will give you that you have to be able to adjust. Selling Your Bike

So you have been thinking about getting a new bike for quite some time. You have been day dreaming in the catalogs. You have looked up all the specs and you know exactly what you want. You even found a shop that had the bike you liked and took it for a little test ride and you fell in love right then and there. You have most of the money you need but there is just one more piece to the puzzle. You have to get rid of your old bike. It’s hard to know where to go to find someone to take this bike off of your hands. If you are hard pressed to find a buyer then keep these things in mind as you try and ditch your once proud ride.

A unique, but effective, first place to go is onto local triathlon websites. Sure, the seasoned tri vets have had time to get themselves into a state of the art bike like the one you are looking at but the beginners often don’t have the equipment they need. They are new to the tri so they are reluctant to spend thousands of dollars on a new bike for a sport they may grow tired of. This is where it’s a perfect opportunity for you to place the ad and try and see if you can sell it to one of them.

The next place to look is at a local bike shop. Often times buyers come in looking for a bike that is less than what the shop is selling. Tell the seller you will be willing to give them a cut of the money if they can sell it for you. It’s a great idea and one that could end up getting that bike off your hands.
